  • ESL instructors

NewsEla Webinars

We have a premium site license for Newsela so log in and set up an account before Friday.  Newsela will eventually be linked to Canvas but we are waiting to hear back from Julissa on this.  Everyone needs to attend one of the hour-long webinars (except for the instructors in the IXL training). Please make sure you have a charged laptop for these sessions.  Here is the schedule:

We just linked Newsela to Canvas (Thursday afternoon).  Here is the info to get started by accessing Newsela through Canvas... Use the following links:

NoRedInk
We have a NoRedInk site license this year.  Scott Cumberbatch in STEM will be leading sessions on how to set up accounts and how to use this platform in your classes. It has a great writing component that you may find very helpful for addressing the workload of teaching writing in your classes.   Mr. Lawshe used it last year and finds it helpful.  You do not have to sign up for these sessions.  The sessions are offered as follows:

Location - STEM Room 303
  • Session 1 - 8:30-9:15
  • Session 2 - 9:20-10:05
  • Session 3 - 10:10-10:55
  • Session 4 - 11:00-11:45

NoRedInk will automatically activate Premium on teachers’ accounts. All you need to do is log into your existing account at noredink.com or, if new to NRI, create an account following these directions NoRedInk Directions

If you see the Training button after logging in, you are good to go! If not, you will need to enter this code (lime-5559) on your Settings page.

WebEx Training

8:30 am to 9:30 am              B104   All Home Instruction Teachers
10:30 am to 11:30 am           B104   Any teacher with approval from their supervisor

PLCs
If you are not scheduled for any of the above sessions, you should meet in your grade-level teams to plan and collaborate on your coursework, SGOs, benchmarks, etc...  I have booked rooms FX 219, 220, 221, 222, 223, and F112 for you to use for your PLCs.

*FYI... I am still in the process of securing the FX conference room as our designated PLC space.  I will let you know when the room will be ready for you to use on a regular basis.

ESL Referrals

All English I teachers... Please begin keeping a list of any students that you think need to be evaluated for possible placement in ESL.  Over the next few weeks, please give some kind of in-class writing sample so that you can evaluate their raw writing ability.  Also, it would be helpful to give them some kind of assignment that requires them to speak aloud in class so you can evaluate them in this regard as well.  I will ask for your recommendations by mid-October.

Attendance reminders:  Attendance must be input within the first 10 minutes of class every day, for all classes.  New Procedure – teachers must enter “A” for absent or “P” for present.    leave it blank for “present.”

Grade-level Teams
We are in the process of securing a PLC room in FX2 for you to meet with your grade-level teammates.  You will arrange your own meeting times with colleagues to plan and collaborate.  I ask that you meet 2-3 times per month.  I will only send out suggested topics for your discussions when the need arises.

SGO Pre-Assessments
Pre-assessments should be completed by 9-30.  Please assist colleagues with the sharing of grade-level folders, assessments, etc…

After Hours Professional Development

If you would like to offer after-hours PD for November, please submit a proposal through MLP. Joaquim and Dr. Parent are looking to offer sessions on instructional technology tools, SmartBoard, and other interesting sessions.

SES PROGRAM - Begins Oct 17th!

If you have struggling students, please suggest that they sign up for the Supplemental Educational Service program. If you feel a student requires tutoring services, please direct the student to the PCTI website. They can find the registration link on the "Student" or the "Parent" tab. If a student is reluctant to attend, please contact the guidance counselor and parent and suggest that they urge the student to sign up. Please make these recommendations early as the program fills up quickly and space is limited.

The program will run for three sessions every Monday and Thursday from October 17, 2019, through May 14, 2020, from 3:00 pm until 4:30 pm. Busing and snacks will be provided.

The fall session runs from October 17, 2019 - December 16, 2019. The winter session runs from January 6, 2020 - March 5, 2020. The spring session runs from March 9, 2020 - May 14, 2020.  Students may sign up for one, two, or all three sessions.

Students are required to attend 75% of the sessions, as space is limited, and continuity is vital. This constitutes no more than 4 unexcused absences for each session. However, as a Title 1 government-funded program, priority placement is given to Title 1 students

Class Coverage Attendance

If you are asked to cover a class, you must take attendance using the following method:

Use this link:  Coverage Attendance Link

Log on: Select "PCTI" as the school - Select the Teacher

Password: enter the day of the month and then "Bulldog"

Example: 5Bulldog is the password for the 5th day of a month.
Example: 20Bulldog is the password for the 20th day of a month.

3. On the start page, click the desk icon in the class you wish to record
Attendance

4. The drop-down menu for each student will give options

“P”  means present
"1" means "ABSENT"
"T" means "TARDY"

5. You MUST click SUBMIT to save attendance

Important:  Students who are failing
or "on the verge"

(these are things that we must do in order to cover ourselves...)

We must make contact with parents/guardians about students who are failing whether that be through a phone call or email.  We must also make contact with a guidance counselor - I would prefer you did that via email.  These things must be documented in the teacher's log in Power School.

If it comes to the point where an IR&S form is submitted, please follow these guidelines:

  • Refer students who are failing or struggling and have difficulties with things such as responding to written or verbal information, organizing, focusing, and/or completing work without constant teacher intervention.  You can also refer students who have exhibited behavior that interferes with learning.
  • You must have made at least 2 forms of intervention.
  1. You must have had contact with a parent/guardian AND contact with guidance and/or CS team caseworker.  My suggestion is to have contacted all of these entities.
  2. Instructional/behavioral interventions - differentiated instruction, extra time, homework or test/quiz reminders, strategic pairing or grouping for collaborative tasks, notes posted on Canvas or Google Classroom, allowing the student to make-up assignments or re-take quizzes or tests, etc...
  • You must state that you made contact with the parent/guardian and a counselor/case manager somewhere on the form.  I realize that it does not request this specifically anywhere on the form, just find a logical place to put it.
  • All of the categories on the IR&S form must be filled in.
  • Use as much detail as possible
  • Please enter a comment in the teacher log in Power School that notes the date that you submitted the IR&S form.
  • Here is a link to the form  I&RS Form
  • You can also find the form on the Professional Portal under "forms, memos & documents"
PLEASE SCREENSHOT THE I&RS FORM PRIOR TO SUBMITTING AND KEEP IT FOR YOUR RECORDS!  LAST YEAR THERE WERE ISSUES REGARDING CERTAIN FIELDS ON THE DOCUMENT - SOME LINE ITEMS WERE NOT SAVED AND IT APPEARED AS IF WE LEFT IMPORTANT INFORMATION OFF OF THE FORMS!

Week 9/9/19

Good Morning all,

I will be adding to the blog as the week progresses so check back periodically...

Shopping

I have medium plastic storage containers and lots of office supplies in my office.  I will need to store them somewhere soon so come stock up!  Bring a shopping bag and shop away!

College Essay Workshop

Our Fall College Essay Workshop is open to seniors and will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning October 1st.  A flyer should be distributed to all senior instructors soon.  Encourage your senior students to take advantage of this opportunity.

Faculty Photos

On Wednesday, September 18, 2019, LORS Photographers will be in the Rocco Cafeteria taking pictures of all faculty and staff for the yearbook. Please make every effort to go to the Rocco Cafeteria on Wednesday, September 18, 2019, to have your picture taken.

Plagiarism Assignments

Please make sure you are administering a plagiarism assignment and posting it in PowerSchool.

Newsela

We now have a "pro" premium account for Newsela.  This is a great resource for creating RSTs!  It also offers great supplements to the works you are teaching.  We are in the process of linking it to Canvas (like EdPuzzle) but I will update you on that when it is set up and ready to go.  In the meantime, use this link to get started.

Newsela Log-in info

We have 2 webinars booked for our PD Day on September 20th.  One will be at 9:00 am and the other at 1:15 pm.  In the one-hour webinar, you will learn about the PRO features of Newsela and strategies for incorporating the platform into your instruction.  All you need to do to log into the training session is to access these "zoom" hyperlinks for the session and you will be added to the webinar...

Fri 9/20/2019 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM   https://zoom.us/j/448963800

Fri 9/20/2019 1:15 PM - 2:15 PM      https://zoom.us/j/887707229

Some of our ELA instructors piloted the platform last year and had great success with it!

You can upload these sessions into MyLearningPlan using "historical PD" and they will be included in your PD hours for the year.

IXL TRAINING - PD Day September 20th

ELA 9 and LAL teachers will attend a 5-6 hour, full-day training session for IXL. You can enter this workshop into "Historical PD" in MyLearningPlan and the hours will be included in your PD hours for the year.
  • Our sessions will begin at approx 8:30 am that day and conclude by 2:56 pm with a one-hour lunch and some breaks along the way.
  • The workshop will take place in our Lecture Hall (FX 135).
  • There will be a mixture of grade 9 ELA instructors, grade 10 LAL instructors, resource and concepts-level math instructors, and an IT aide who will be providing in-house support to our instructors throughout the year.   We have some instructors who will be introduced to the program for the first time, some that have some familiarity with it and some that have been using it successfully for about two-five years (math teachers).
  • Three of the instructors who will be present attended a workshop in Elizabeth, NJ this past spring.  These instructors may be able to assist in the workshop with the more advanced attendees.
  • The lecture hall is split into two sections, so we may divide staff according to their abilities and familiarity with the program.
  • Our goals are to prepare us to incorporate the platform into our daily coursework and routines.  We will also use the continuous diagnostic feature with our ELA 9 instructors as a guide for suggested remediation in the 10th grade and placement in the LAL course.
  • You will be set up with usernames and passwords prior to the workshop.

NoRedInk

If you haven't done so already, check out NoRedInk.  It is a great educational platform that is available for you to use.  I think it will be useful for sophomore through senior levels and we have a premium account.

NoRedInk automatically activated Premium on teachers’ accounts if you had signed up last year! All you need to do is log into your existing account at noredink.com or, if you are new to NoRedInk, create an account following these directions. If you see the "Training" button at the top of the screen, you are good to go! If not, you need to enter the code lime-5559 on your "Settings" page.

If you would like to know more about this platform or need some help getting started, see our own Mr. Lawshe.  He tested it out last year and has been using it with his classes!

Google Classroom

Google Classroom has added a few features.  They now include an Originality Report and a Rubric Maker.  If you would like some assistance with these new features, please contact Nicole Shema and she will help you!

Canvas Mini-Sessions

Julissa will begin offering Canvas Mini Sessions to all instructional staff beginning next week - September 16th. The sessions will be held various periods and on various topics (assignments, quizzes, etc.) and will last about 35 mins. You can sign up for sessions in MyLearning to reserve your spot and receive PD Hours. Sessions will be available for sign up starting this Thursday, September 12th. Please Email Liz Garcia a summer contact number...

IMPORTANT INFO FROM MAXIEL...

In order for the final exam to show up under the E2 term and calculate correctly into the overall final grade, it must have the due date of 6/19/2019 – 6/25/2019.  Any other due date will cause the final exam to be counted as a regular test in the R3 term and not calculate correctly as 10% of the final grade.

FYI...  SENIOR GRADES HAVE BEEN STORED. If you still have a lot of changes to make please NOTIFY MAXIEL ASAP.
Final Exam Info

Official directions will be sent out by Mr. Bucci, but I am posting this here so you can have it handy...  I will update this if any changes are made...

GOOGLE CLASSROOM EXAMS
Those who are using Google Classroom for exams, please shut the exam assignments off after the exam day.  This will force the students to come to campus for their make-up.  If you leave it open, I will not know that they made up the exam and it will sit there - I don't want you to have to grade it in the summer!

Before the end of the week, please store all class sets of textbooks in cabinets in your classrooms and post an inventory list on the front of the cabinet. No textbooks should be on window sills, under desks or on top of file cabinets.

Senior Final Grades

Due Monday, June 17th 8am.

The official due date for all other grades is Monday, June 24th @3pm (last day for teachers)- however, they will be stored on Tuesday, June 25th in case there are any last-minute entries.

Because it’s the end of the year you will not have the normal 1-week grace period to enter your grades. Be mindful of this and regularly update your grade book in these next few weeks.

Summer Assignments will be loaded this week.  Dan Molczyk will directly link the folder on our website.  Thanks for getting this done!

SN Instructors
I made a separate folder for the modified SN assignments - I will email those teachers directly about collaborating with the teachers in the prior grade levels - they will assign the modified summer reads to their students before the end of the year.  This will avoid confusion by not having the modified ones on the website.  The link for the modified assignments is

The grade 11 modified assignment is loaded here so you can use that as a guide of how to label it - use the course number first, then the grade level... (Thanks ELA 3 peeps!)

Canvas Exams

All Canvas final exams should be loaded on the "Supervisor Page."  Yesenia in the IT department will be reviewing them to make sure all of the settings are correct and functioning.  After she reviews and approves them, I will send out an email that they are ready to be copied into your classes.  She will begin reviewing them tomorrow, so all grade levels using Canvas must have an exam loaded on the Supervisor page by 9am Wednesday (6/5/19).  Directions for how to import the exams into the Supervisor page are on the 5/20 blog...

Google Exams

*If you are using Google Classroom for your finals, you will proceed the way you have done in the past - just make sure all of your settings are correct and all information/directions are posted and CLEAR.

Make sure that if you are asking students to submit essays to turnitin.com that those directions are clear and posted.  If you are using images or pictures for any reason, please make sure they are viewable when you load your test.  We Will Not Have Google Tech Staff in the Control room on exam days, so make sure your test is solid.  Please have another teacher review your test to confirm that it is ready to go.  The time to deal with issues is now, not on testing days...

IMPORTANT

I will have to issue and grade make-up exams after graduation.  I am not confident that everyone is using the same exam per grade level and since they have not all been loaded into the Final Exam Folder on Google, I am going to go "old school" here...

Everyone using Google Classroom for their exams MUST print your exam and drop off a hard copy in my office. The exam must have your name and grade level printed on it and there must be a key attached.  This will ensure that the students who have to make-up the exam get the correct copy.  I will send out an email on Friday to remind everyone to do this.

Returning Novels-Reminder

When collecting novels from students, please make sure to issue obligations for books that are so damaged that we cannot re-issue them.  Please separate these books and mark them "for disposal."

Please follow this procedure - Please separate these books. Mark each one with the following information:  Mark them for disposal, indicate your name and the student name.  Please state whether you issued an obligation for the book. You can put this info on a post-it and attach it to each book that needs to be taken out of circulation.

Here is an example of a book that was recently returned.  Things like this - water damage, pages missing or ripped, etc., should be marked for disposal.
