This is more of a "Mid-Weekly..."

Active Shooter Drills

Panic Buttons have been installed throughout the campus (there is one right outside my office). Only 4 are activated at this point.  Six or seven more will be installed. Anyone can push a panic button in an emergency - student or teacher.  Cameras are focused on the areas surrounding the buttons and will confirm who pushed it.  In an active shooter emergency, the button should be hit only once.   These buttons lock all the electronic doors and an automated message regarding the lockdown status goes out across campus.  These panic buttons alert the sheriff's department and Wayne police.  In the future, there will also send a telephone message and radio alert to all local PD who may be in the area.  When a button is hit, a message as to the location of the button is sent to Mr. Ghallager and Dr. Parent.

We need to take the active shooter drills seriously - practice as if they were real  The next one, February 5th,  will be an "internal" one - it will not go out to law enforcement.  The April one will go out to the local agencies.

You can also dial 311 to lock down the building down.

Team meetings
Team meetings will be tomorrow - Thursday 1/24.  Coverages will be sent for those who need it and suggested agendas will go out later today but we will be discussing possible curriculum revisions, a new "summer read" philosophy and ideas for next year's benchmarks. I will try to come to the meetings to chat with you regarding some of these things (however these days anything I plan to do gets squashed and I end up putting out fires...)  We will have IXL for all Freshmen and BSI.  It has a continuous diagnostic feature that will make placement much easier next year and give Freshmen teachers a great option for classwork and homework. We can roll it out to Sophomore teachers at some point but it is expensive so I have to work that out.  Those ELA 10 teachers that are piloting it can help us train the Freshmen teachers next year.  I am also 98% sure we will have a Newsela pro account - it is like CommonLit on steroids.  Check out the free version in the meantime. Everyone will have access to this platform - it offers ready-made text-sets and writing packages that provide informational texts that can be used for RSTs and many of them relate to the themes and literary pieces in our curriculum.  My goal is to make you the "designers" of the blueprint for how we do things so I am relying on your commitment to making us better, more efficient and more effective - all with less stress.

Department Meetings

Our next department meeting is February 5th.

"Bulldogs In the Know"

for notifying us of the activities, accomplishments, and picture taking requests for your students,  please take the time to begin now.

Bulldogs in the Know” is the Communication Department’s new procedure for collecting information about what’s going on at PCTI. As the population of our school continues to grow, we want to keep track of the numerous events & accomplishments of our faculty/staff/students! Use this vehicle for notifying PCTI of the activities, accomplishments, and picture taking requests for your students.

A special google form found on the Professional Portal is an easy way to submit accomplishments, stories, and events to the Communications Department.  Your active participation will allow PCTI to supply content for social media, press releases, technician articles, the outside marquee, inside monitors and more. It will also track and schedule up-and-coming events for photographic coverage!

This “Bulldogs in the Know” google form is now on the professional portal for easy access for all teachers & staff. Please share all your good news stories and accomplishments.

New Technology Sign-in System

The technology offices/stations at PCTI has implemented a new sign in system for students. Students scan their ID to sign in and out when visiting a Technician. If you’re ever questioning a student’s whereabouts, a log of their visits is available to everyone via the “Checkpoint” link on the teacher and admin PowerSchool portal. These checkpoints are located in the F-Media Center, H-13, and STEM Technology office.

Just a few things...

Our department meeting is scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday 1/15) in the Lecture Hall

The February 5th meeting will be mandatory - only coaches who have games are excused. Cancel any after-school tutoring for that day.  We will be discussing how we will address writing next year, new benchmarks and a few other things.

Team meetings are scheduled for January 24th - coverages will be assigned to those who need it.  Please take a look at NoRedInk prior to the meetings.

Small Request for our Senior instructors

Our friend Genevieve needs our help with a quick senior survey.  On Monday, we are asking all senior English teachers to take 5 minutes out of their classes to allow the students to complete a yearbook survey. The seniors, historically, do not always respond to surveys, so doing it together in class will help us get better results.

My suggestion is to post the link to your Google Classroom or Canvas page and use it as your “do now” on Monday.  If you are absent on Monday, you can do it upon your return.

Benchmark alert - please make sure you are planning your benchmark soon.  It should be issued by the end of January.

New Courses -  Junior instructors  - I will send you a student survey  Junior instructors will post the Google Form for the students to respond to.  This is an interest survey for our proposed courses for English IV.  I will send this to you sometime today.  Please make sure the students complete and submit it.

Lesson Plans - Assignments are now posted in Google Classroom for January and February.

2nd Cycle Observations -  the 2nd round of observations will begin soon.  If you have a specific lesson that you would like me to evaluate, contact me for scheduling!

WONDERFUL THINGS!

Congratulations to the boys and girls swim teams  - both won the Passaic County Championship this weekend.  This is only the third time in history a school has won both titles (we did it last year too). Also, the girls swim team is undefeated.  The team is coached by Genevieve and Laura...
(see if you can find Laura in the pic!)

Department/Faculty Meetings

  • Dr. Parent's Faculty meeting was moved to Thursday January 10th
  • Our next department meeting on January 15th

*As per Dr. Sabbath...
  • Department meetings are contractual.  Coaches and advisors are required to attend.  Coaches must arrange for assistants or head coaches to cover their practices. If you have a game on the day of a department meeting, you can arrange to meet during your prep, duty or after school. Department meeting schedules have been issued for the year in advance, so please plan accordingly.

PLCs

  • Official Team meetings are scheduled for Friday 1/25.  Coverages will be arranged for those who need it.

NoRedInk
  • All grade levels - I want you all to take a look at the teaching resource "NoRedInk."  We have free access to it for the next month or so (there is also a limited free version that a few of the STEM teachers have been using but the link below will give you more access).  I am thinking of using this specifically to replace APEX for the Freshmen next year, however, we will most likely have a school-wide license for all grade levels. It has an internet-based curriculum with specific skill-set adaptive exercises and a writing component that can even be used with higher level students for ACT/SAT practice or even AP practice. There a wide range of options with this program and I think it is a very viable option for us.  I am asking that you take a look at it when you can (I know you have more than enough on your plates).  If this can make your lives easier next year, I think it behooves us to take a look.  It can be used in class or as homework options.  Please take your time to dive into the full scope of the content in the Curriculum tab and other Premium features.
  • In the writing section, there are about 50 content-based long form passages and 6 that are specifically SAT or ACT aligned. You can view more of these in the Curriculum Library by clicking on any topic, then scrolling to the bottom to find any passages that are available.
  • I will be talking more about this in our department meeting and you will be discussing the use of this program in your next team meeting, so make sure you familiarize yourself with the program prior to your meetings.  You have at least 2 weeks to take a look at it before then...

Doctor's Notes
  • If you are absent and see a physician, all medical documentation should be scanned and saved in your computer and the copies should be given to Maddie Toro in the Human Resources department.  She will put them in your medical file.   You do not need to give me a copy.

IMPORTANT  - Parent/Guardian Contact

  • If you have students who are failing or on the verge of failing, you MUST contact the parent/guardian via email or a phone call.  Document your contact in the Power School Teacher Log as well.  You can contact guidance, however, contact with the parent or guardian must have been made first.  If you do not receive a response back from the parent, forward the information to me and I will make the attempt.  If you cannot find contact information in Power School, email me and I will investigate.  You can "cc" me on the parent emails and I will keep a record of them, however a comment in the teacher log is essential. If you do not know where that log can be found in PowerSchool, come see me.

  • If the student failed the first trimester, contact should have been made with the parent/guardian --  a comment on the progress notes is not sufficient.  Also, if you checked that you were requesting a conference on the progress notes, and no arrangements have been made, please email the guidance counselor and request the meeting.

General Housekeeping

  • Please make sure that your benchmarks have been uploaded to your SGO spreadsheets AND PowerSchool.
  • Freshmen instructors should be current on the APEX units as those scores will be used for placement when we begin scheduling...
  • If you have students on bedside instruction, please keep in contact with the bedside instructor and make sure the student is current in their assignments.
  • Attendance - we have not had many issues with "missing" attendance in the past few weeks, however, if you are experiencing errors that you think are not entry errors, please contact Maxiel...

TWO MORE WEEKS AND THE HOLIDAY BREAK
WILL BE UPON US!

Important: Please Read...

Trimester Grade Locks

Going forward, enter "borrowed books" assignments into the system with a June date.

Here is the reason...

The trimester grades will now lock at the end of the cycle (Dec 12th).  If you have a "borrowed books" assignments loaded with dates from Trimester one, and will not collect the books until Trimester 2, you must change the dates ASAP to a date in Trimester 2 (or just put a June date in).  You will not be able to get back into the assignment for the book returns when you need to after the cycle closes on the 12th.

Also, if you have other assignments that fall into this scenario, you must adjust them as well.  For example, if you have benchmarks or pre-assessments that have assignments loaded in Power School with Trimester 1 dates but do not have grades entered yet, you must change the date to one in Trimester 2 (otherwise the grades must be entered by the 12).

If you have questions about this, email me or see Prinzo (she is the wizard of this realm and can probably explain this better than I).

Honors and AP Prospects

Start thinking about students who should be eligible or show potential for Honors and AP courses. Remember to consider that diligence and work ethic is admirable however skill also should factor in.  Also, students that are involved in multiple activities may find the AP courseload to be more than they can handle if they are going to miss class on a regular basis.  These are the things that WE must discuss with them prior to placement because we cannot count on anyone else relaying this info to them. If they are interested in AP, they could be attending SES afterschool to prepare for the challenge, so talk to them about that as well.

It’s early and the course request process won’t start until after R2, but it’s best to start planting the seed that a teacher’s requirement will be needed to request Honors and AP courses.

We will begin our scheduling meetings when we return from the winter break.

Books Returns and requests:

1) Do not order novels from the book room for other teachers.  For example, do not order "for the room." Order novels for your students only.

2) When you have collected the novels, enter a pickup request in the Google Form asap.  DO NOT GIVE THEM TO ANOTHER TEACHER TO USE.  It is not an inconvenience for the "books guys" to entertain these pickups. In order to keep and maintain accurate records, we must follow this process.

3) When you have books that need to be returned and are not ready to enter a new novel request, enter zeros in for the book requests and fill in only the pickup requests on the Google Form.

Wellness Day:

Wellness Day:  PCTI's 3rd Annual Wellness day is scheduled for March 13, 2019. The goal is to bring as many "whole body and mind" resources as we can to our PCTI students. Some of the presentations last year included yoga, stress relief, mental health resources, drug/alcohol awareness, nutrition, etc. Each year the program has grown and has included both outside agencies (i.e. Susan G. Koman) and PCTI resources (i.e. the Teen Center, Cosmetology students, etc).

This year we would love to draw upon the talents our faculty members in related areas of mental awareness. Therefore, if anyone feels like they (or their shop) can contribute to this year's wellness event, please fill out the form below.

Requesting a Leave:

Medical/FMLA/NJMLA Leave

1. All medical leave requests should be in writing.
2. All requests should come with a doctor’s note that clearly defines the start date and the end date as well as the reason for the leave.
3. The staff should submit these items to you and you are responsible for submitting them to Human Resources.  All leaves require that action be taken by the Board of Education prior to their start date and no action will be taken by the Board of Education without Human Resources being in receipt of these documents.
4. If backup documentation is necessary, Human Resources will contact the employee and/or employee’s doctor for that information.  Initially, we will ask the employee to provide the information from their doctor.
5. Staff should contact Yari Stevens or the Payroll Department regarding their health benefits prior to the start of the leave.
6. Should the employee begin any long-term leave without prior approval, it could result in a loss of salary.
7. In an emergency situation, staff should contact their immediate supervisor who will, in turn, notify Human Resources.  Human Resources will follow up with the staff member to acquire the necessary documentation.

Just a few things for "The Weekly..."

  • Department Meeting:  Our Next department meeting is tomorrow - December 4th.

  • Essay Contest:  The American Legion Auxiliary Essay Contest provided by Cathy Pagano...  Please share this link with your students. Deadline is January 15, 2019

  • Crisis Counselors

We have 2 crisis counselors on staff.   Jennine LaCorte is available for help with non-classified students. She can be reached at extension 7235. The crisis counselor for special needs students is Jamie Saracino.  She can be reached at extension 4153.  Please make sure we are referring students to the correct counselor.

  • Benchmarks:
We should be in the process of issuing the first benchmark.  The second one should be assigned towards the end of January.  The third should be assigned in about mid-March.  This spaces them out in a logical sequence and gives ample time in between before the final deadline for SGOs...

Wonderful Things...

So, many of you probably know that although I do not have any artistic talent, some members of my family do.  My cousin Brian (aka KAWS in the art world) currently has a show in NYC at the Skarstedt Gallery.  For any of you "art folks," it runs through the 19th of December.  It features some of his current work.  He started out as a Jersey City skateboard kid and then began his turbulent years of dodging the police for his prolific graffiti art in and around Jersey City and NYC.  He ventured into art school after high school and began his journey.  He has been one of only two "living" artists to have his creations featured as balloons in the Thanksgiving Day parade and his sculptures have made their way around the world.  Some are the size of buildings.  Every once in a while, his stuff is featured by companies like Hennessy and VANS.  He has even been featured in a Simpsons episode and designed a Moonman for the MTV Awards!  He initially became famous for wrapping his artwork around real photos of celebrities.  Kate Moss and Lindsey Lohan were some of the early ones.  The crazy point came when Kanye asked him to do one of those pieces for a billboard in Times Square for the release of his new album "808s and Heartbreak."  Oh, he designed the album cover too.  If you are looking for something to do in the city, stop by and check out his stuff!  We are very proud of him.

(Please send me some of your "wonderful things..."  Otherwise, I will have to start posting pictures of Ned again...)

His sculture pieces are called "companions."

This is a sweatshirt featuring his work - the line was released by Uniqlo last week.
It features his spin on Sesame Street Characters!  I got this one for Victoria Scarpa for her birthday!
Chuck is very Proud!
