Week 9/9/19

Good Morning all,

I will be adding to the blog as the week progresses so check back periodically...

Shopping

I have medium plastic storage containers and lots of office supplies in my office.  I will need to store them somewhere soon so come stock up!  Bring a shopping bag and shop away!

College Essay Workshop

Our Fall College Essay Workshop is open to seniors and will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning October 1st.  A flyer should be distributed to all senior instructors soon.  Encourage your senior students to take advantage of this opportunity.

Faculty Photos

On Wednesday, September 18, 2019, LORS Photographers will be in the Rocco Cafeteria taking pictures of all faculty and staff for the yearbook. Please make every effort to go to the Rocco Cafeteria on Wednesday, September 18, 2019, to have your picture taken.

Plagiarism Assignments

Please make sure you are administering a plagiarism assignment and posting it in PowerSchool.

Newsela

We now have a "pro" premium account for Newsela.  This is a great resource for creating RSTs!  It also offers great supplements to the works you are teaching.  We are in the process of linking it to Canvas (like EdPuzzle) but I will update you on that when it is set up and ready to go.  In the meantime, use this link to get started.

Newsela Log-in info

We have 2 webinars booked for our PD Day on September 20th.  One will be at 9:00 am and the other at 1:15 pm.  In the one-hour webinar, you will learn about the PRO features of Newsela and strategies for incorporating the platform into your instruction.  All you need to do to log into the training session is to access these "zoom" hyperlinks for the session and you will be added to the webinar...

Fri 9/20/2019 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM   https://zoom.us/j/448963800

Fri 9/20/2019 1:15 PM - 2:15 PM      https://zoom.us/j/887707229

Some of our ELA instructors piloted the platform last year and had great success with it!

You can upload these sessions into MyLearningPlan using "historical PD" and they will be included in your PD hours for the year.

IXL TRAINING - PD Day September 20th

ELA 9 and LAL teachers will attend a 5-6 hour, full-day training session for IXL. You can enter this workshop into "Historical PD" in MyLearningPlan and the hours will be included in your PD hours for the year.
  • Our sessions will begin at approx 8:30 am that day and conclude by 2:56 pm with a one-hour lunch and some breaks along the way.
  • The workshop will take place in our Lecture Hall (FX 135).
  • There will be a mixture of grade 9 ELA instructors, grade 10 LAL instructors, resource and concepts-level math instructors, and an IT aide who will be providing in-house support to our instructors throughout the year.   We have some instructors who will be introduced to the program for the first time, some that have some familiarity with it and some that have been using it successfully for about two-five years (math teachers).
  • Three of the instructors who will be present attended a workshop in Elizabeth, NJ this past spring.  These instructors may be able to assist in the workshop with the more advanced attendees.
  • The lecture hall is split into two sections, so we may divide staff according to their abilities and familiarity with the program.
  • Our goals are to prepare us to incorporate the platform into our daily coursework and routines.  We will also use the continuous diagnostic feature with our ELA 9 instructors as a guide for suggested remediation in the 10th grade and placement in the LAL course.
  • You will be set up with usernames and passwords prior to the workshop.

NoRedInk

If you haven't done so already, check out NoRedInk.  It is a great educational platform that is available for you to use.  I think it will be useful for sophomore through senior levels and we have a premium account.

NoRedInk automatically activated Premium on teachers’ accounts if you had signed up last year! All you need to do is log into your existing account at noredink.com or, if you are new to NoRedInk, create an account following these directions. If you see the "Training" button at the top of the screen, you are good to go! If not, you need to enter the code lime-5559 on your "Settings" page.

If you would like to know more about this platform or need some help getting started, see our own Mr. Lawshe.  He tested it out last year and has been using it with his classes!

Google Classroom

Google Classroom has added a few features.  They now include an Originality Report and a Rubric Maker.  If you would like some assistance with these new features, please contact Nicole Shema and she will help you!

Canvas Mini-Sessions

Julissa will begin offering Canvas Mini Sessions to all instructional staff beginning next week - September 16th. The sessions will be held various periods and on various topics (assignments, quizzes, etc.) and will last about 35 mins. You can sign up for sessions in MyLearning to reserve your spot and receive PD Hours. Sessions will be available for sign up starting this Thursday, September 12th. If you have questions or have trouble finding the sessions, email Julissa Rodriguez directly.

Kami

Kami has added an Admin Panel for you to run your own analytics as well as add/delete users and has integration with Canvas now.

If you would like to set up a time with Aden at Kami to go through any of these new features - sign up here:   https://calendly.com/aden/availability-for-calls?month=2019-08
